CauseLane field guides
Why is your business website slow? Measure before you optimize
A slow page is not necessarily caused by hosting. Image transfers, fonts, blocking scripts, layout shifts and server responses all contribute differently. Establish a baseline first.
Identify representative pages
Include the homepage, a product or service page and a contact or checkout page. Measure on realistic mobile connections as well as desktop.
Separate field data from lab results
PageSpeed Insights may show real-user field data and simulated lab diagnostics. Record which type you are citing, the tested URL and the test date.
Examine the largest content element
Look for oversized hero media, slow resource loading or rendering delays affecting Largest Contentful Paint. Optimize the actual bottleneck, not a random asset.
Inspect responsiveness and movement
Investigate long main-thread tasks and unexpected page movement. Reserve dimensions for images and embeds and limit unnecessary JavaScript.
Check caching and backend timing
Measure response times, compression and cache behavior. Do not cache personalized data or critical authenticated/checkout responses without explicit safeguards.
Compare before and after consistently
Repeat the same test scenario after each modification. Include functional regression checks, not only a higher synthetic score.
