Shopify checkout not working? A practical diagnostic checklist

A checkout failure can originate in payments, shipping rules, inventory, markets, an app, or a temporary provider incident. Work from a reproducible symptom instead of changing a working store at random.

Capture the exact failure

Record the affected product, customer region, payment step, timestamp, browser and the exact error text. Exclude personal information and payment-card details from diagnostics.

Use an approved test path

Reproduce the issue using a supported payment-provider test mode or a safe merchant-approved transaction. Do not use someone else's credentials or real card information.

Check product and destination rules

Inspect shipping profiles, destination availability, inventory and market restrictions. If only one product or region fails, the problem may be configuration-specific.

Separate cart errors from payment errors

If an add-to-cart button fails, investigate the storefront separately. If checkout loads but payment fails, examine gateway configuration, payment status and the corresponding error logs.

Review recent changes and incidents

Identify recently introduced apps, checkout extensions or configuration changes. Check the official Shopify and payment-provider status pages before assuming an infrastructure defect.

Change one variable, then retest

Preserve the previous configuration, make a bounded adjustment, repeat the failing test, and document whether the symptom changed. Roll back unhelpful modifications.
