Business website cost checklist: what to ask before hiring
No single package price fits every website. Content volume, custom interactions, commerce, integrations, accessibility and long-term ownership affect cost. Compare written scope rather than headline quotes alone.
Define the business objective
Decide whether the site is intended to collect enquiries, book appointments, publish resources or sell products. The goal shapes functional requirements.
List all deliverables
Specify page count, content-writing responsibility, imagery and licensing, mobile design, forms, SEO basics, accessibility and integration responsibilities.
Separate upfront and continuing costs
Ask for separate estimates for domain, hosting, email, themes, paid plugins, transactions, support, backup and security updates.
Confirm account and code ownership
Agree who owns the domain, source, content, analytics and third-party accounts. Make handover and access rights explicit before payment.
Define a measurable acceptance test
Specify browser coverage, required workflows, launch responsibilities, revisions and bug-fix terms. A screenshot alone is not proof of a functioning website.
Compare realistic total cost
Compare the first-year and renewal-year costs, not just setup fees. Identify assumptions and exclusions before agreeing to a project.
